HISTORICAL LANDMARKS:
Leakey has many historical landmarks in town. There are several on the grounds of the county courthouse. One is a monument to John Leakey.
This monument was erected in 1983.
There is a monument
dedicated to Real County.
This is located at the
courthouse as well. This monument was
created in 1936.
Another marker on the courthouse grounds is for the courthouse itself. This marker was erected in 2000.
There is another maker
for the Leakey cemetery once
known as the Floral cemetery.
This marker was erected in
1988. Catherine McLauren and
Allen Lease were the first people
buried in this cemetery.
John and Nancy Leakey are also
buried in this cemetery.
The Leakey schoolhouse is also a historical site. This monument was erected in 2004.
A monument was established for Catherine Mc Lauren.
This monument was put up in 1971.
Mrs. Mc Lauren was killed in the last Indian Raid in Frio Canyon.
There are also markers at the Leakey Methodist Church-1994.
This congregation began meeting in 1856.
The church was built in 1890.
